The Plunge

Bronze Sculpture

52 inches tall, approximately 300 pounds

First Reactions:

  1. Bullet  The first reaction to “The Plunge” is typically one of humorous fun.  It is enjoyable to watch children examine it...trying to figure out where his head went...how he can hold his breath for so long.

  1. Bullet  Oh, what memories the sculpture can elicit for anyone who is an avid swimmer.

Deb was born and raised in Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, where it is possible to have fun with a refreshing jump into a freshwater lake on a hot summer day.

  1. Bullet  The plunge...what’s holding us back from taking the big plunge in our own lives???

“The Plunge” has become a symbol for action.  Take the first step, make a commitment, dive in and get started.  It’s amazing what we can accomplish once we take the big plunge!

Background:

The  52 inch version of  “The Plunge” was created in 2007 for the yearlong SculptureWalk competition in Sioux Falls, SD.  The beautiful Sioux Falls community quartzite fountain inspired a water theme.  An 18” tall bronze maquette was created and entered in the competition.  Then, Deb got the call...if she could create the sculpture in a life-size version in time for installation, she was in!  It was time for her to take the plunge and make a commitment.  Deb had been creating sculptures in 1/4 to 1/2 scales, so this was a new experience for her.  She set aside all fears and committed.  There were moments when she wondered what she had done, but taking the plunge turned out to be a life changing event in her art career.

As a result of the installation in Sioux Falls, a second casting of the sculpture was purchased for permanent installation in a 4 1/2 acre outdoor sculpture garden called Gallery in the Park in Altona, Canada.

In 2009 “The Plunge” was accepted in The Mayor’s Art Council  Avenues of Art in Gillette, Wyoming, installed in front of the Aquatic Center.

The third casting of “The Plunge” was selected by the Edina Public Art Committee for inclusion in the Grandview Square Park, Edina, Minnesota  for the 2009/2010 season.  In the 2010/2011 season it was selected for installation in the Edina Promenade where it won the People’s Choice Award and will stay installed through the 2011/2012 seaon.

A fourth casting was completed in late 2009 and won an award at the Society of Minnesota Sculptors juried exhibition “Fall for Sculpture” in Bloomington, MN

In this version, the artist created a vivid blue patina on the splash portion of the bronze sculpture.
